December Vogue

VOGUE - December 11 Issue

December Vogue

GISELE's cover may be all everyone has been talking about for weeks, but the rest of the December issue of Vogue has plenty to offer too.

Ok, so, let's get it out of the way. She's Electric - that Gisele feature - sees the ultimate supermodel work the brights trend as only she can whilst chatting to Christa D'Souza about everything from her son Benjamin's yoga birth, to life with her five sisters, to what her family eats (broccoli for dessert, and red meat - but not without praying first). You must read it. You must see the pictures. Or you won't know what all your friends are talking about tomorrow.

Other than the golden-haired one, the magazine charts 2011's people to celebrate, including Sarah Burton and James Corden; Terry Richardson rounds up all of New York's most talked-about names - from Justin Theroux to Charlotte Free; Charlotte Sinclair meets the most interesting 14-year-old in film, Chloe Moretz; and Tim Walker heads to Mongolia to capture its surreal beauty as only he can.

With Christmas in mind, shopping as well as celebration is high on the agenda, so Vogue's list of the 115 best gifts this year will help get you started, while The Long Game might make you reconsider your short party dresses in favour of something more dramatic.

Faces Of Fashion

VOGUE
Faces Of Fashion

FASHION'S most beautiful and iconic photographs are set to be sold at Christie's on November 2. The collection features an impressive roll call of modern history's biggest stars captured in candid, honest portraits - from Johnny Depp to Marilyn Monroe to Marlon Brando - to famous fashion shots of Vogue covers and shoots, taken by photographers including Helmut Newton, David Bailey and Horst P Horst.

"The sale presents a fantastic opportunity to buy some of the most iconic fashion and celebrity images which have shaped our popular culture of the 20th Century," said Christies' head of sale, Alexander Montague-Sparey. "Horst and Newton's ability to so poetically play with the notion of elegance and style with their models, is exemplified this season. Alongside female grace, we come across Mick Jagger and Johnny Depp, whose relationship to Bailey's lens is captivating. What all our fashion and icon photographers all have in common in this sale is their ability to home in on the star quality of their muses with such originality, drawing out their souls."

Highlights include 1940 cover of US Vogue, the magazine's name created using models in different poses, David Bailey's intimate pictures of Mick Jagger and Johnny Depp and a shot of Marilyn Monroe caught off guard, drinking a cup of coffee in an American café. Estimates start at £500.

Time For Fashion Tea....

Time For Fashion Tea

THE Berkeley is back with its seasonal fashion high tea. This time the cake collection is inspired by the autumn/winter 2011-12 collections and takes Stella McCartney's spot dress, Miu Miu's golden glitter shoes, Lanvin's elegant draped capes, Sonia Rykiel's stripes and Burberry's sugary trench - among others - as its key looks.

Rabeanco Going British

Rabeanco - VOGUE

Rabeanco Going British....

LUXURY handbag label Rabeanco has launched in the UK for the first time, with a new flagship store in Covent Garden.

"We were not actively seeking to open a London store at this time, it just seemed to make sense to do it and everything else has fallen into place," said the label's director Andrew Ng. "Having our own shop in the UK allows us to offer the full comprehensive collection of all ranges and use our knowledge of the products to sell directly to customers. We'd like to open more retail outlets in Europe as the brand grows."

With women such as Carine Roitfeld, Lara Stone and Abbey Lee Kershaw as muses, the brand is known for its understated, functional elegance - each made using high quality Italian leather.

"We know woman are sensitive to shape, quality, texture, and the ultimate touch-and-feel, so we never compromise with our leather quality, which is why we pay the utmost effort to source the finest leather from Italy," explained Ng.

Highlights from the autumn/winter 2011-12 collection include satchels in bright blues, coral and brown, shoulder bags with chain trim detailing and slouchy duffle styles.

"A bright and rich colour palette has been the inspiration for our new collection," said Ng. "Each bag was designed to make a difference, with greys and karkis to luxe shades in green, chestnut, camel."

"It's my today's taste and style and a reflection of how I think a great number of people would like to be dressed now," Lagerfeld told WWD. "I just want not too expensive clothes that people may like and perhaps want to wear. That was my concept for a long time, but my business partners in the past wanted to be like Chanel or Fendi without putting behind what is needed to be like that."

The 100-piece range will feature evening and daywear, including timeless black dresses with plunging backs, silver jeans and vest tops. Although the collection will launch initially online, there are plans to open dedicated Karl Lagerfeld stores and temporary boutiques.

"We are thrilled and proud to be the exclusive partner for the launch of KARL,"  said said NET-A-PORTER.COM founder and executive chairman Natalie Massenet. "From the moment we saw the collection we were hooked and we can't wait to introduce this to a global fashion consumer for whom Karl Lagerfeld is an icon in his own right. The collection will speak to every woman who wants a bit of the inimitable fabulous street chic that Karl Lagerfeld is known for. And given Karl's fascination with all things modern, this will be a 21st Century launch - globally available, in-season for instant gratification and harnessing the power of the digital media and social commerce.  It's truly an honour for us to collaborate with Karl and his team."

Red Sole Fight...

Red Sole Fight

Updated Wednesday October 19, 10.31am:  Christian Louboutin has launched an appeal against the court's decision not to grant an injunction stopping Yves Saint Laurent from producing red-soled shoes - but a verdict may not be passed until 2012. The shoe label filed its first brief to the Court of Appeal in Manhattan on Monday with the hopes of protecting its trademark red soles, whilst YSL's representatives have not yet filed the expected counter-suit.

"All the briefs from both sides are on a schedule that the Court of Appeals agreed with, to wit: all done and in before the end of the year," Louboutin's lawyer told WWD. "Considering what is at stake, it is probably fair to assume a ruling sometime in early spring, if not earlier."

October 19 - ON this day in history...

October 19

ON this day in history...

...2001, Alexander McQueen revealed he had a strange crush - on Michael Portillo. "It was really exciting to meet Michael," said McQueen. "If I'd been allowed to vote I'd have got him in. I've always fancied him."

...2004, the unexpected friendship between Kate Moss and Sarah Ferguson was explained. Both Moss and Ferguson were set to appear naked but for a pair of Jimmy Choos and some Cartier jewels in a book to raise money for Elton John's AIDS Foundation. Ferguson was photographed with her modesty covered by a silk sheet while Moss was completely bare with a cigar hanging from her lips in the book entitled 4 Inches.

...2004, Tom Ford admitted that his time at Gucci was not all sober sailing. "Five o'clock every day, man, it was cocktail hour," he said. "And those cocktail trays came out, trays of vodka tonics, and the whole staff would keep drinking till like 9. I drank through the whole thing. Maybe I was a bad boss. I think I was a good boss."

Forever Young.....

WORKING on Marc Jacobs' dance hall-themed show was unlike any Fashion Week experience model Codie Young has had before.

SEE YOUNG'S CATWALK LOOKS

"It wasn't like working on any other runway show because you're on that catwalk from start to finish," she said. "There was this real sense of excitement as the curtain went up and a sense of relief when it went down again. It was a performance more than a show. Marc is so passionate about his collection. He really takes time to choose the models he uses. For the fittings, each model had to pull a pose like in the show - it reminded me of the musical Chicago."
SEE THE MARC JACOBS SHOW

Australian-born Young made her catwalk debut last season at the autumn/winter 2011-12 shows and has since walked for Chanel, Marni, Rick Owens, Sonia Rykiel, Erdem, Peter Pilotto, Mulberry and Carven.

"This season was much easier than last, when I walked for 49 different shows," Young told us. "I was so tired by the end of it - this time round was much more enojoable. I knew what to expect, I'd made friends and there were less castings because designers knew me."
Now 18, Young was scouted in her local shopping centre just over a year ago but, despite her impressive career so far, she says art is where her heart lies.

"I love what I do, and how it gives me a way to travel - but it is just a job for me," she explained. "I love art, particularly painting - but it's difficult to carry around all my materials when I'm modelling, so I draw a lot at the moment. Before I was scouted, I was going to go to art school. I still want to one day - maybe in San Francisco. I like the idea of the arty vibe they have over there."

For the meantime Codie looks every inch the model, dressed in chunky military boots, a vintage shaggy jacket, skinny black jeans a faded T-shirt - a look she describes as "hippie-grunge".

"I love vintage shopping," she tells us. "London is so good for that. I'd much rather find a piece that's one of kind than head to Zara and buy something everyone else has."
Despite her ambitions to study art, Young still has her eye on some big labels for future modelling jobs.

"I'd love to work for Viktor & Rolf and McQueen," she said. "The creativity behind each of those labels is incredible. If I got to wear a pair of McQueen shoes I think I'd die. The thought behind the designs is amazing."

Karl Lagerfeld is Mr Labelfeld...

Mr Labelfeld...

KARL LAGERFELD has come up with a new name for himself, based on his many collaborations - from Coca Cola to Magnum to Macy's.

"I'm a walking label no?" he said. "My name is Labelfeld not Lagerfeld. I have a sort of Alzheimer's for my own work, which I think is a very good thing. Today too many people remember what they did - just forget it all and start again."

When asked how he manages so effortlessly with his workload, at both Fendi and Chanel, his answer is simple.

"I have it in my blood," he told CNN. "When I was asked to Chanel, it was not trendy. I made something of it because I was given total freedom by the owner. What I do Coco would have hated. It's my job to keep Chanel updated."

Marc Jacobs for Christian Dior?

Marc Jacobs - VOGUE

Since March of this year, the fashion industry has been abuzz with theories on who will replace John Galliano as creative head at Christian Dior. He was fired earlier this year due to his drunken anti-Semitic remarks. With choices ranging from Alexander Wang to Keren Craig of Marchesa to Givenchy's Ricarrdo Tisci, it now seems like the most likely successor will be Marc Jacobs

Dependable Fashion newspaper WWD has reported that talks between LVMH and Jacobs, who is currently head of an eponymous label and the Louis Vuitton label, have been ongoing. Meetings between them are to take place this week in Paris.

If Marc Jacobs is the replacement of choice at Dior, his place at Louis Vuitton is to be taken by Phoebe Philo. Philo too is part of the LVMH bandwagon as creative head of the label, Celine.

Rumours have hit every source from fashion magazines like Harpers Bazaar and Vogue UK, fashion websites, to the blogosphere. As for who really does end up heading what, it is all in the hands of LVMH head Bernard Arnault who will make the final decision.
