H&M’s Talent Hunt
H&M is campaigning to find the
fashion's next big designers, as it launches an international competition
involving 14 art and fashion colleges from around the world. Graduates from
each country will compete for the Global Design Award prize - which comprises €50,000
(£41,676), a show at Stockholm Fashion Week on February 1, as well as the
chance to have their designs sold in selected H&M stores later in the year.
"I'm
very excited about the H&M Design Award," said H&M Head of Design
Ann-Sofie Johansson. "It´s our first ever prize for new young designers,
and it's been such an inspiring experience to meet these talented graduates, to
hear the vision behind their collections and to see the final result. With
the award I hope we encourage young designers around the world to believe in
themselves and their creativity. I can't wait to share the experience with
everyone online."
Graduates
from each college - which include those from Central Saint Martins and the
London College of Fashion - will battle it out to become the local winner from
their country. A judging panel will then choose which young graduate will take
home the final prize. From January 13, the progress of the competition will be
posted online, allowing the public to follow the process step by step.Christopher Kane offered his advice to designers
entering.
"It's
something I can really relate to - I was a student not so long ago," he
said. "It's really intense, because soon you'll be out in the big, bad world.
Fashion is hardcore, so you really need to stay true to your vision."
"I
think this is the most important platform of their careers so far," added
Hilary Alexander. "For the winner to win that amount of money and to show
at Stockholm Fashion Week is incredible because they really will be catapulted
to the front line of fashion."
